¿Por qué una serie televisiva? Consideramos al cine y las series como un escenario que nos permite realizar una lectura singular de la situación, casi al modo de un recorte clínico.
Sabemos que Freud se valió de diversas expresiones artísticas para explicar la complejidad del alma humana y que Lacan a lo largo de su obra menciona más de veinte películas para articular conceptos teóricos. Proponemos aquí utilizar los contextos televisivos a modo de textos y hacer de ellos un pretexto para aprender algo de aquello que del arte nos conmueve, pero escapa a una lectura lineal y consciente.
Para ello pondremos a trabajar el método clínico-analítico.
La serie Breaking Bad fue estrenada en el 2008 y finalizada en 2012, con Brian Cranston como protagonista en el papel de Walter White, representando un típico hombre de clase media norteamericana, casado con una linda mujer que está embarazada y a su vez tienen un hijo que padece una discapacidad física.
Walter White es un profesor de química de secundario, a quien los alumnos suelen pasar por encima y que por las tardes trabaja en un lavadero para poder sustentar económicamente su vida.
Se nos hace saber que es brillante y que en la química roza la genialidad; de hecho de joven fue el creador intelectual de una idea, pero apresuradamente y engolosinado por retirarse del negocio por $U5000 abandonó la empresa. Luego de un tiempo, este proyecto adviene una multinacional de una suma invaluable. él sigue relacionado con estos profesionales y esto lo frustra aún más por tan mala decisión.
Su mujer también lo ve como un “genio venido a menos “y su cuñado que trabaja en la brigada de policía de lucha contra el narcotráfico (DEA) lo percibe como un nerd “al que le faltó calle“para establecerse en la vida más cómodamente.
La serie nos muestra escenas en donde también en el lavadero es maltratado por su jefe y es enviado a hacer tareas para las que no fueron acordadas previamente.
Una primera cuestión a pensar: Lo que el entorno le devuelve a Walter, no es otra cosa que un reflejo de su propio espejo interior. Él se ve a sí mismo como un hombre frustrado y es así como se hace leer por su núcleo familiar, social y laboral. Él tiene una mirada desafortunada de su propia vida, entonces, su entorno lo visualiza con lástima.
Walter ha quedado preso de un ideal sostenido en la línea del éxito económico, ha canjeado el ser por el tener, y lo que deduce de esa fórmula es el siguiente resultado: Si no tengo una victoria económica destacada, no soy nadie. Posicionado en ese lugar, donde la medida queda estipulada por el triunfo monetario, nada de lo que sí ha logrado en el recorrido de su vida, puede ser tomado como un plus, como un tesoro a disfrutar. Tanto su mujer, como el hogar que ha conformado,como su hijo adolescente y su hija por venir, quedan desestimados y vaciados de sentido para él si no les deja una seguridad material por el resto de sus vidas. Refugiado en el ideal capitalista, se defiende del encuentro con la cita de aquello que de su deseo, debería ponerse en marcha respecto de las elecciones que ha jugado en su vida.
Como sabemos, el neurótico es aquel que primero construye su propio obstáculo (de modo inconsciente) para luego sorprenderse de haber tropezado con tal dificultad en su camino, y quejarse por ello.
Ni bien comienza la serie, el conflicto se echa a rodar: a Walter White se le declara un cáncer de pulmón y toda su preocupación pasa por cómo sobrevivirá su familia cuando él ya no esté. Es así que acompañando a su cuñado Hank en un procedimiento para desarmar una cocina de fabricación de drogas, se queda esperando en el auto y es en ese lapso de tiempo que observa como un ex-alumno, Jesse, escapa por la ventana de la escena del delito. Se le ocurre entones la posibilidad de cocinar metanfetamina para asegurarle un futuro a su familia y solventar su quimioterapia, mientras su ex-alumno se encargaría de la venta.
Rápidamente Walter comienza a tener una doble vida, su mujer no comprende sus conductas y sus ausencias y él se refugia en el argumento del shock emocional que le provoca la enfermedad.
Ella le reclama más presencia, pero aunque las cosas no le cierren, decide creerle. El químico se adentra en el mundo del narcotráfico y rápidamente se pone e negociar con los carteles mexicanos en donde establecen contratos de autoprotección, colaboración y reparto de territorios del cristal que él y JessePinkman fabrican, con todas las consecuencias de asesinatos, traiciones y robos que eso conlleva.
Walt pasa de tener una vida común y corriente, a una “vida de película“ (de terror, por cierto) pero en donde su creatividad en la fabricación de la meta más pura del mercado se despliega con toda su fuerza.
En un primer momento de la serie, Walter fascina al espectador por la “noble causa “que lo mueve a “salvar a su familia de un porvenir incierto”. Ha trabajado toda la vida,es un típico ejemplo de la clase media norteamericana y esta catástrofe subjetiva que se pone en marcha a partir de la enfermedad terminal nos conmueve, y deseamos que le vaya bien, que “cocine lo necesario “ para rescatar a su familia, dejándolos con un futuro asegurado, para luego dedicarse de nuevo a otra cosa.
Lo paradójico es que queriendo salvar a su familia la abandona. Aquí es importante situar una diferencia entre asistir y estar presente. Walter asiste todas las noches a su casa, duerme en su cama y despide a su hijo cuando se marcha a la escuela, pero no está presente, no conecta con su mujer, no comparte su vida, se oculta, está enajenado de la cotidianeidad doméstica.
Vemos acá una de las razones por las cuales esta serie ha tomado tanto vuelo y atrapado a tanto público, porque pone como eje de reflexión y cuestionamiento a los valores asociados al modelo masculino tradicional que marcan al padre de familia que tiene como rol principal y prioritario ser el proveedor económico.
Pareciera que en esta sociedad en la que vivimos todo queda justificado, al estilo de “El fin justifica los medios”. En este caso, es justamente lo contrario. Cuando Skyler, su esposa, y Walter Junior, su hijo, más lo necesitaban, porque el miedo a perderlo los invadía y la necesidad de compartir tiempo con él era un deseo inminente, él más se ausentaba y comenzaba a convertirse en un desconocido para ellos.
Es una escena común:mujeres que reclaman al hombre más conexión y reciben como respuesta:“bueno, tengo que trabajar para sostener a la familia” y con eso que da justificada su actitud de no involucrarse en los conflictos cotidianos de la crianza de los niños etc. La mujer queda así en el lugar de la insatisfecha, la que no obstante lo que este buen hombre le da, necesita más comunicación, momentos familiares con los hijos.
Skyler y su hijo desean que Walter se ubique como pareja y como padre respectivamente, no que los sostenga económicamente, sino que les deje las vivencias que les permitan seguir adelante sin él, charlas , juegos, historias, risas, llantos, en fin, un vivir juntos…
En síntesis, parece que esto de sostener a la familia a cualquier precio, todo lo justifica y esto se hace evidente en la serie. Skyler comienza a convivir con un desconocido sin tener la posibilidad de que ella pueda decidir si a este nuevo hombre, con sus nuevas elecciones lo elige o no lo elige.
TODO VALE CON TAL DE SOSTENER A LA FAMILIA; y así las familias van entrando lentamente en vidas muy escasas, muy pobres subjetivamente hablando, y sin posibilidad de un crecimiento conjunto.
Estaríamos frente a otro caso si Walter trataba de buscar una salida al conflicto, JUNTO a su mujer, apoyándose en la familia que le ofrecía ayuda, en los amigos que también lo hicieron, preparándose en equipo para que Skyler retomara su actividad laboral como contadora, en fin, armar de a dos, la mejor salida que contemple la singularidad de ambos implicando un crecimiento y una unión entre ellos (tal como diría un músico de nuestro tiempo, Pappo, “Nada como ir juntos a la par”).
Skyler, a lo largo de la serie, va transformándose en su posición y decide ir abriendo los ojos, salir de la posición de niña que solo reclama, e implicarse en lo que le toca.
Hay una escena muy breve, sin palabras, que cambia el curso de los acontecimientos para la vida deella. Es un instante en que, embarazada y estando detenida en un estacionamiento, prende un cigarrillo. Una mujer sentada en el auto de al lado la mira de modo sancionador por semejante actitud frente al evidente descuido, pero Skyler continúa fumando. Ya se sabe sola, ha quedado desnuda y no hay quién la salve de su desamparo. Será ella la que tendrá que tomar a su cargo la protección de su familia, ya que su marido se ha vuelto un peligro para todos. Es ahí cuando le dice a Walter “Tengo que proteger a esta familia, del hombre que protege a esta familia”. Su descuido frente al cigarrillo para su bebé en gestación nos anticipa que ya no esperará que sea otro quien la cuide, si ella no lo hace, la integridad de todos los miembros de la familia quedará amenazada.
Sabemos que el tema de violencia de género nos tiene a todos sensibilizados como sociedad, pero también entendemos que violencia no es solo pegarle a la mujer, sino que cambiar las reglas del contrato que esa pareja haya hecho cuando decidió unirse, de forma unánime y a puro capricho de una de las partes, ocultándoselo al otro, condenando a los miembros de la familia a vivir en una miseria afectiva. Es interesante notar que poco a poco la serie nos va develando distintas cuestiones acerca de Walter, quien se hace llamar Heisenbeg. Werner Heisenberg fue un físico alemán de los más destacados del siglo XX, que usó su genio para la causa alemana en la segunda guerra mundial. Conocemos que una vez concluida la guerra fue detenido junto a otros científicos que también trabajaron en el proyecto armamentístico nuclear.
Los guionistas nos hacen saber que, amparado en salvar a su familia, lo que está verdaderamente en juego es su ambición de ser reconocido como un genio y único en lo suyo, pagando cualquier precio por ello, matando, asesinando a un niño, y corrompiéndose sucesivamente en pos de su resarcimiento narcisista que lo saque de esa mirada de perdedor al que ha quedado identificado. De hecho termina confesando que todo lo hizo por él.
Hay varias escenas que se encargan de mostrarnos cómo apunta a ser encontrado, especialmente por Hank.
En una de ellas cuando su cuñado celebra en la cena familiar haber cerrado el caso y haber hallado a Heisenberg. Walter, afectado por el alcohol y celoso de que crea que el genio y brillante era otro, le dice: “Me parece que todavía no lo has encontrado”; Skyler lo mira perpleja y no puede creer que sea su esposo quien lo incite a reabrir el caso.
En escenas siguientes Walter deja fallidamente en el revistero del toilette la pista de los poemas de Walt Whitman que son los que encuentra Hank desatando el principio del fin del protagonista.
Pero si nos quedáramos en esta lectura, estaríamos interpretando la historia casi linealmente y siguiendo el propósito que los guionistas se plantean. Así, el protagonista va mudando a un ambicioso insaciable,que solo ansía poder y reconocimiento. Este anhelo de ser nombrado como una mente brillante, se le juega especialmente consu cuñado Hank, al que cela en la relación con su propio hijo. En muchas escenas Hank oficia más de padre de Walter Junior, que el propio Walter que lo incita a beber o a mentirle a su madre. En síntesis, ya el nombre de la tira nos lo anticipa, Breakingbad, corrompiéndose.
Pero ¿Qué es lo que realmente mueve al protagonista a semejante vuelco en su vida? ¿Se trata solo de un deseo de reconocimiento por el otro?
Aquí es donde vamos a abrir nuestra nueva apuesta en la lectura del método clínico-analítico: en toda la serie hay una sola escena en donde Walter se quiebra frente al hijo y le regala generosamente parte de su verdad, es la única en donde nos anoticiamos de un recuerdo de infancia y ubicamos allí la clave de su giro a partir de la enfermedad.
En el capítulo 10 de la cuarta temporada, él viene de una pelea con Jesse, su socio, está destrozado y olvida asistir al cumpleaños de su hijo, quien asustado lo busca en su casa. Al verlo todo golpeado, lo asiste, lo lleva a su cama y le repara los anteojos. Cuando se retira de la habitación, el padre le dice “Gracias Jesse”, fallido que devela que él ya lo abandonó como hijo hace tiempo y su acento está puesto en otro lado, en otro hijo.
Al declarársele la enfermedad Walter abandona simbólicamente a su hijo y pone toda su fuerza en Jesse, a quien cuida (a su manera) y al que procura dejarle un legado, alguna enseñanza, respecto de su saber químico.
A la mañana siguiente Walt encuentra Walter Junior en el sofá del living y se da una escena en la cualWalter se quiebra y le relata algunos recuerdos infantiles a su hijo, respecto de la muerte de su padre, ocurrida cuando él tenía apenas seis años.
Le cuenta que a sus cuatro o cinco años, su padre enferma de Huntington, una enfermedad con mucho deterioro físico y mental progresivo, y que en ese entonces y en el tiempo posteriorsu madre le narra historias del padre, detalles del padre que el repetía automáticamente pero que no le pertenecían. Ese padre que la madre quería que él tuviera era una mentira para él. él dice: yo no sabía quién era, no lo conocía.Walter confiesa que la única imagen real que él tiene de su padre a los 5 años, es entrar en la habitación y sentir ese olor a QUIMICOS, que oscilaba entre el hedor de la enfermedad yel aroma de los productos de limpieza... “como si quisieran tapar el olor a enfermo”.
Él hace nada más ni nada menos de su vida que un químico, como un modo de buscar un padre, punto en el que ha quedado detenido.
Walter relata que cuando entra a la habitación del hospital, su madre lo sostiene para que haga contacto visual con su padre,quien no tenía control muscular, y el papá no lo reconoce.Qué invade a un pequeño de 4 o 5 años cuando se mira en los ojos de un padre que no puede reconocerlo? ¿Qué color tiene ese miedo? ¿Qué aroma despide? Lo que los adultos le decían eran meros conceptos intelectuales para él. Walter queda perdido, buscando una brújula en su vida que se le escapa todo el tiempo.
La madre le armó una farsa de un padre que nunca existió para él, prohibiéndole de ese modo que pueda ver la verdad de la situación, y permitirle hablar, tramitando como pudiera a ese padre. Ella le demandó que repitiera de memoria el padre que a ella le hubiera gustado que fuera para ese pequeño… Y de ahí el estrago.
Una vez declarada su enfermedad, él se vuelve ese hedor del padre, fabrica una droga que deja a sus consumidores postrados e inmóviles como su padre, perdidos espacio-temporalmente y abandonados en su aseo y lo que hace Walter con su vida, que huele cada vez peor.
Recordemos por un momento que las escenas vividas entre el Fort-da, ese juego de presencia-ausencia y hasta el final de la constitución del Edipo, tienen un lugar privilegiado en la estructura, al modo de placas fotográficas que a gritos pedirán ser traducidas y reinterpretadas. Ese espacio previo al cierre del Edipo es un espacio en donde la configuración del Otro se está construyendo, es un espacio diseminado, fragmentado, y esos fragmentos son inconexos, no se puede concebir aún como un espacio ordenado, como una totalidad. Estas vivencias están parceladas y ordenadas por tensión y descarga. Todavía no hay un resguardo narcisista que soporte semejante peso. Estas impresiones no se tramitan totalmente una vez cerrado el complejo de Edipo, algunos restos quedan en el aparato exigiendo su tramitación e insistiendo con su retorno.
Hay situaciones que pueden llevar a un sujeto a caer en ese tiempo sin tiempo, es un espacio impensado pero no por eso inhabitable, cuando alguna coyuntura toca esa fibra íntima, algo de ese espacio sin límite se actualiza, y entonces el sujeto vivirá en otro tiempo, intentando desesperadamente hacer algo con ese imagen casi alucinada que lo perturba y lo lleva a lo peor sin saberlo.
Walter, a partir del desencadenamiento de su enfermedad, oscilará entre ese hedor de la habitación, haciendo que su actuar huela cada vez peor y fabricando algo que coquetea con la muerte, y el olor a productos de limpieza del hospital, reflejado en la obsesión por la pureza de su cristal y la excesiva pulcritud que exigía en su laboratorio
Despliega con sus actos la pregunta que le quedó detenida en su primera infancia ¿Quién es mi padre? ¿Quién soy para él? Pregunta que su madre obtura, poniendoen su lugar una farsa. Su enfermedad toca la del padre y eso lo desbarranca.
También dice que ese olor de la habitación le penetraba en los pulmones, otro modo de recordar a su padre padeciendo nada más ni nada menos que un cáncer de pulmón.
Cuando se presenta la enfermedad, lo real del cuerpo actualiza lo no resuelto de su propio padre en él. Entonces, en lugar de mostrarle la verdad a su propio hijo, condena a Walter Junior a convivir con un padre desconocido.
Walter White repite lo que su madre hizo con él. En otras palabras, se identifica al rasgo odiado de la persona amada y desde allí quiere ejercer su paternidad alejándose cada vez más de ella.Esas primeras imágenes infantiles que son retratos visuales, gustativos, táctiles, auditivos y olfativos, si al cierre del Edipo no quedan escritas y traducidas simbólicamente, permanecerán habitando en el cuerpo pulsional como marcas.
Una vez constituida la neurosis, esas marcas que trazan pero no dibujan, competirán con la escritura del superyó amenazando con volver y en su regreso, arrastrar al sujeto a ese borde traumático. Serán los dolores de otros tiempos los que retornan, desbarrancando la vida del sujeto.
La escena mencionada con Walter y Walter Junior, culmina con el padre diciéndole con vehemencia al muchacho: “No quiero que me recuerdes como me viste ayer”; y el hijo le responde, “ayer fue lo más humano que vi de vos, prefiero este padre al que te convertiste en el último año” ( una vez declarada su enfermedad).
En el desenlace de la serie, el hijo decide no perdonar a ese padre que se ha convertido en un asesino destruyéndolo todo. Pero si Walter Junior puede tener libertad de elegir no repetir la historia de su padre y sostenerlo, pagando con su existencia como lo hizo Heisenberg, es porque tuvo otra madre. Una madre que vacila, niega, pero que finalmente decide mostrarle la verdad de su padre por más horrorosa que sea, por más desagradable que huela.
Es esta escena infantil, con los miedos coagulados, con preguntas desgarradoras no cerradas, la que Walter deberá enfrentar para poder elegir ser otra cosa para su hijo que lo que su madre hizo con él; pero él repite en acto,como un modo de resolver quien es.
Walter se vuelve un desconocido para su hijo, como lo fue para su padre, no dando lugar al azar y a lo nuevo en él.
